My little tyke is 16 months old. He arrived at daycare one morning to find this new toy & he is obsessed. So much so, his grandmother ordered it for him today to have at home.
He stays so focused on it's many functions. Of course, it IS mind challenging for toddlers this age, but for curious little ones, it is terrific.
He does require assistance on matching the colors & shapes, but he is (as I feel most children his age are) fully capable of turning the dial, pulling the handle, and "fishing" out the shapes from the bin.

We bought this toy for our twin daughters around their first birthday. They love it! The small shapes fit perfectly in their hands, and they love to rattle them. The girls are doing an increasingly good job of matching the shapes/colors of the rattles to the slots in the toy. They have also learned to turn the handles on the side and then look for the shapes in the slot below. So it's a multi-step toy, which I think is really helping them learn. Most plastic toys are very cheap, but this is really well made, so we have ordered more Tolo toys from Amazon.

This is one of the best shape sorting toys that I have found so far. It has 6 rattling shapes, and each makes a slightly different noise. You match the shapes and then spin the wheel or pull the lever to move on to the next ones. This teaches problem solving because your baby will have to figure out which shapes to put in the holes and then how to move the wheel on.

1 year olds love to put things into things....... but they can't do the whole shape sorting thing just yet. I got this hoping this would bridge the gap.
I do like it as the shapes are easily grasped and the spots they fit into match the color of said shape, so this helps reinforce the idea behind the toy. The different handles are fun too.
My only grip with the toy is that it is difficult to extricate the shapes from the toy once they are in there. You have to reach in, then up and around to get them all out--definitely not something the 1 yr old can do on its own. Thus, it is a toy that needs to be played with help or the kid will just get frustrated
