Favorite Christmas Toy!Jan 02, 2011
By J. Smith I bought this for my 20month old son for Christmas and it's his favorite present. The first day he played with it for over an hour straight! I was hesitant to buy a stringing toy because my son has a tendency to wrap things around his neck so I am very cautious. When I read this one had a safety release on the string, I thought it would be worth a try. I am so glad I did! Sure enough he wrapped it around his neck and it snaps apart into two short segments. Very well made, the segments snap together again very easily. As far as I know, this is the only stringing toy with this type of safety mechanism. That alone was well worth the money. The other pieces are large and my son enjoys fitting the "u" shaped pieces around the cube like a puzzle. He's enjoying the lacing so much, I am so glad I did not have to wait for him to be older to use the other lacing toys with the longer strings that would be a strangulation hazard!
great lacing set for little onesAug 08, 2010
By Sarah Longwell-Stevens My 16 month old started stringing things together the other day and we wanted to get him a lacing beads set. Unfortunately most of them have very small pieces and aren't safe for the little ones. When I found this set I was so excited. It is perfect for him now and there is room to grow. The "needle" is the perfect length making it very easy to string, there is a ball at the other end to keep the beads from sliding off, and the string has a quick release snap in the middle so you don't need to worry about it getting wrapped around their necks. The "beads" are very sturdy and nicely made, and none are small enough to fit in his mouth.
We started with just the three beads (sphere, cube, and triangular prism) and the string and my son was fascinated, he sat there experimenting for a good 20 minutes. After that one sitting he has figured out how to get one or two beads on and off.
We will save the other shapes for when he is older. I agree that maybe if you have an older child this set is too basic, though it is an interesting geometry set since there are so many different ways you could fit the beads together. I think if my son was older I would start with a different set but this is one that I'm sure he will love for a long time.
