"Someone was in the pod. Look sir, droids!"Feb 01, 2012
By R. Ferguson This is Lego's second set featuring the escape pod from Star Wars IV, the first being #7106 from 2001. Introduced in January of 2012, set #9490 is certainly an improved design, the escape pod featuring a conical shape (rather than cylindrical as in the earlier set) along with nice thruster detailing at both ends of the pod. The shell of the pod lifts off to reveal seating areas for the droids and a control panel. Stickers decorate the side of the pod. There is also a little speeder bike included in the set, though a dewback would have been nice.
The main reason to purchase the set is for the mini-figures; it includes four: R2-D2, C-3PO, and two Sandtroopers. C-3PO sports a new torso that allows one to see his mechanical/electrical innards at the abdominal opening; he also has printed eyes on his head. The Troopers have sand marks on them, giving them a nice weathered look, and they also have printing on their legs. Dressed in different colored pauldrons, I think these troopers are some of the best Lego has made.
In terms of playability, this is a funny set. Escape pods are single-use vehicles and are not given to dogfights or flitting about the galaxy. So the limited plot-line of the movie means kids have to be extra inventive. But the set makes up for this in plenty of mini-figures and just a nifty pod design. Given the assortment of fairly useful parts (curves and conical sections), this is a good value set. And since Lego only seems to offer an escape pod once every decade, well, here's your chance to get away with one.
Once Upon A Time On TatooineMay 14, 2012
By D Lee This set is really impressive; 2 new kinds of sandtroopers, a new swoop bike, two movie-accurate droid, and a well-designed escape pod. I bought the Droid Escape from 2001, but this one is so much better. The minifigures are the best!
Great set from the epic star wars tale.May 12, 2012
By Vince This set is great, considering the new c-3po and sand-troopers are in a set that isn't an expensive set. The escape pod looks very good and high detailed, and it sturdy. All in all, recommended for any star wars fan.
These are the Droids You're Looking ForMay 03, 2012
By Christopher Price I bought this set and have played with it for a while. I have really enjoyed it so far. The escape pod is one of the best small lego vehicles I have seen in a long time. The cabin fits both C3-PO and R2-D2. Also, the two droids are really cool. The C3-PO actually had eyes and the mid-section reveals his wiring. Also, R2 still has movable legs. The Sand troopers are the best part of the set. One has an orange sash on his shoulder and the other has a white one. The troopers are worn and weathered looking so that you get the impression that they have actually been in battle. The speeder is basic and ok, but it is a minor feature of the set. This set is worth the purchase just because of the four mini figures. Trust me, this is one of the best Star Wars sets I have bought in a while.
Star Wars Droid Escape 2Feb 28, 2012

This is Legos second remake of the classic Star Wars Droid Escape in Episode IV. In this model, the escape pod is much more detailed and bigger then the previous version making it more realistic. Additionally, the previous escape pod version only came with two mini figures that included R2-D2 and C3PO. In this model you are getting the additional two sand troopers that are well worth it. The two sand troopers boast a new armor that looks like they've been in an actually sand storm. The speeder bike that is included in the model is not that detailed, but is a nice addition for the sand troopers.
Overall, this is a great model to get for the money. Not difficult at all, and an easy build to complete and get playing with in no time!
