4our first k'nexAug 24, 2010
By third time mom
my son received this as a gift; he's too young for it's target age(7+) but his 9 & 11 year old sisters went to work building it. We are a Lego family, not K'nex so this is a new type of building for us, but honestly I'd say might be a tough build for a 7 year old unless he or she has a lot of K'nex background. Actually, the connector/stick part of the coaster was pretty straightforward, it was just adding the coaster track that was problematic. It kept snapping off its connection points. Once it was all together though it seemed sturdier, but still quite fragile in comparison to Lego. The coaster function works well and the kids were thrilled with the final product, enough so that the price is well justified for the end results. Just be prepared to help the kids with the coaster track.

edited to add after 6 months: We put this together again yesterday. I'm still going to say that, while an older child (probably older than the target minimum age of 7) could build the frame, a parent will probably need to step in for the track. The directions are, quite honestly, lacking. The photo angle frequently changes once you get to the track section. The track kept popping off its connection points leaving the builder to figure out where the connecting piece attached to the main frame. Once it was finally in place, it worked. It's fast. It's pretty neat. But as another reviewer put it, "then what?" You can only watch it zoom around so many times. If you lose one teeny, really teeny, piece, this might not run. I don't see my kids using the pieces to make their own creations either. Perhaps a big bin of generic K'nex would be better. Lego does a better job with directions, and creates a more sturdy end product. I'll probably push my kid towards lego building components over K'nex even though the K'nex looks neat.

5very nice setOct 27, 2011

Can't share the majority's frustration. I bought this for my 4 year old and we already assembled/disassembled the coaster 10 times probably. Every time it holds firm, my son can do almost the whole thing himself and likes to re-do it so much. Then break apart and do again. He only needs help with the tracks and chain. It's so much developing toy for a 4 year old.

To all who complain about lack of use - invent your own configurations. That's a real challenge for an adult, esp. having only the parts from this set, but it gives you way more satisfaction. I built 3 different types of coaster from this set only, all of them are unique and different from the original. I may be posting those on youtube actually :)

Overall - a very useful and inspiring toy

Great Idea, but poorly designed. The pieces do not fit together that well, and as a result, the device is unbalanced and unsteady with track pieces falling off at random. I bought this for my 11 year old son and the frustration was not worth it.
We have had better luck at legos, erector sets and lincoln logs.

1Impossible -- For A 7-year-old AND His ParentsDec 26, 2010
By Jeremy G. Butler
I can't imagine my 7-year-old could possibly have assembled this. Way too many tiny pieces that have to connect JUST SO.

So, my wife and I spent about two hours attempting to assemble it and make it work. Never could get the coaster tracks to attach properly to the frame. They kept popping off. The entire structure is too fragile and complicated to put together and hope it will last more than two seconds.

We considered super-gluing the whole thing together, but then the 7-year-old said he'd prefer to return it and get a toy that works.

I've never written a review before - but this toy is so bad, I'm breaking my silence! Save your money. My husband and I spent over 3 hours trying to get the track to connect and never got it going. I fancy myself a pro at tackling the obscure instructions that accompany most children's toys. I am the go to parent for lego help - but this track just doesn't stay on.
