5Suprisingly great toys, but watch prices...Mar 22, 2010
By A. Saunders
I picked these up from Target. Let me tell you their prices, because some online ones (including, sadly Amazon, atm) are really, really off:

-Habitat: $30, included THREE hex arenas, THREE straight pieces, TWO curved ones, and, most importantly TWO nano bugs! Don't pay more than $30 for it, I've seen it on Amazon for nearly twice that.

-Starter set: $12, included ONE hex arena, TWO curved pieces, ONE nano bug.

-Single nano bug: $8.

I'd *highly* recommend the habitat set, it's the BEST value by far, assuming you don't get a horrible online price.

The starter set is not a bad deal, but it's not as much fun as the habitat.

The individual nano bugs are kind of expensive, and no way to start. Without SOME sort of habitat pieces, you're just chasing this thing around the room. But that may be fun too!

So.... what are these things?

I thought they were little robots. Turns out this is generally what HEXBUGs are, but they've been scaling them down to simpler and simpler things.

These things are completely dumb, no sensors at all. But the design is brilliant.

They have little curved rubber legs that don't move. They have an on switch. When you turn then on, they vibrate. That's it.

But that's all that's needed. They SHOOT across a flat surface, and when they hit a wall, they shoot off at at angle. They even right themselves if they are on their side or back. It's an elegant design. The result is something that looks and behaves amazingly similar to a cockroach, but simply consists of a vibrator (motor with weight), battery, and rubber legs. That's it!

The shapes of the case allows it to both bounce off of walls and right to themselves. They are unstoppable.

I don't know how long the battery lasts, but you can replace it.

My 2 year old LOVES them. He can easily turn them on or off, and he can't (short of immersing one in water) hurt them. He's given each of them names and attaches a lot of personality to them, he acts like they're pets. They are a good size for him, no moving parts to break. It's actually a brilliant little toy.

I kind of want to turn the habitat into a gambling game... roll a couple of them into a habitat (like dice) and first one to exit the open door wins. They are surprisingly entertaining.

5A GREAT ADDITION TO THE NANO HEX BUGMar 19, 2010
By Margaux Paschke
We bought this starter set and it is a bargain! You get a small habitat and a Nano Hex Bug. The habitat has an open arena and one small loop.

The habitat keeps your bug safely contained if you keep all the doors shut. You can easily raise the orange doors to open passages for the Nanos. It is easy to connect any other habitat item. Additional passages and arenas are available to build your own habitat as big or small as you'd like.

My kids love to place a couple of Nano bugs inside to watch them scurry around. They often start them out here with open doors and see how long it takes them to escape. Please note that only the Nano bugs can be used with this habitat, the HexBugs are too large.

5Best Toy Ever!Jan 16, 2011
By David Lumsden
I bought one of these for each of my sons aged 3 and 6 for Christmas. Santa also got them many other toys including radio controlled cars, games, a skateboard, etc. Both of my boys spent the entire day playing with their Hex Bugs. All the other toys were opened and set aside. They built new tracks, experimented with what surfaces the bugs worked best on, how long the battery lasted. (a full day of constant play) This has been, by far, their favorite toy ever. Even a month later they play with these every day. One note: don't buy the "Hex Bug" batteries listed here. You can get the same batteries in a 50 pack for about $5 right here on Amazon. Check the size and put it into the search window. My boys will be playing with these till summer without using up all the batteries! GREAT TOY!

5bugs, BUGS!Jul 04, 2010
By C. E. Anderson
These are great and the Starter Pack is a good way to start. But you definitely want two Hex bugs to watch the randomness of their movements. My six year old and I have a great time watching which ones will go through the half circle first.

5Nano ReviewJan 11, 2011
By J. Parsons
We ordered this for our grandson for Christmas. He had a list of items that he was interested in and we chose from that list. Luckily, we were at his home when he opened ths gift and he was delighted! He said "Isn't this the coolest thing?" He planned to use some gift money to add some more pieces to the starter set to make it even "cooler"!
