Mirror Blocks Rock!Apr 07, 2012
By Meghan Mirror Blocks by GuideCraft are completely awesome. These are PERFECT to add with my 2 year olds other blocks AND it's extra fun because he can see his reflection in them. Kids LOVE mirrors so this was an easy "must have" kind of purchase. I suggest these to every parent of a toddler because these blocks are sturdy and fun. I can tell they're going to last a while, love the quality! We have Melissa and Doug blocks and these add more building opportunities (and taller towers to knock down). Don't think, just buy. :) Especially when they're on sale!!!
Dont regret purchaseMar 04, 2012
By Nicholas K. Nordberg My twins are 16months old. My son has loved to gaze in mirrors since he was born... and he has limited mobility so using his upper body for simple tasks like knocking blocks down is a good mode of activity.
For christmas I purchased him this set (and his sister the sand filled set) and I felt the product that arrived was close enough to my expectation.
They aren't cheap, but to add into say another more economical wooden block set, it really feels like a special toy.
My kids don't sit and play with them for long, but I would guess that is due to their age, perhaps they are not quite old enough to do much apart from my help.
The mirrors do get smudgy fairly easy, but I expected this. Kid fingers on mirrors... how could that not be the case?
The mirrors do slide a bit within the wooden block/frame - no concern that they would fall out, but it wasn't expected. I don't have any complaints about the wood, it isn't really smooth but it doesn't look cheap per se.
Basically, I'm saying the quality isn't awesome, but there's not much alternative in buying options and it's not as though they're going to fall apart, just us adults would like something very aesthetic and up-scale for spending more than $2 a block...
Great idea...okay qualityFeb 01, 2012
By buyalltoys I like to start by being positive. Overall I am not sorry that I bought the blocks and the 2 y/o boy who received them really likes playing with them. They are a neat idea and add some interest and dimension to our standard block sets.
Now for the cons:
1. The wooden frame is not the high quality that I expected after owning the Plan toys water blocks. These blocks are compatible with the Plan toys water set because they are similar appearing, and they are the same sizes and shapes. However, the joints on the guidecraft blocks don't look solid and you can see spaces in between the pieces of wood. The wood is also not great quality when compared to the plan toys blocks. It is rough in some places and has not been sanded well. It's not so bad that I am concerned about splinters; it just isn't the luxurious smooth suface that one would find in the Plan blocks. I will say that they are rounded on the edges which is a nice feature for safety.
2. The mirrors are not great. They are acrylic for safety so we can't expect them to look exactly like a true mirror surface. However, they arrived with a lot of dust and smudges on them as if they were dirty from the production process. After cleaning them off, I realized that they are also covered in little scratches and places where the reflection is blurry because of dried glue. They scratch easily, even while wiping them off with my t-shirt. In my set, 2 of the blocks have loose mirrors. It is not really problematic, but hearing them slam back and forth when the block is moved is more evidence of poor quality control.
Alternatives:
As far as I know the only other mirror blocks are the Haba ones. I have not actually seen the Haba blocks so I can't comment on the comparison. In general, Haba blocks are high quality, so it might be worth a try, BUT-from the picture, the haba blocks look like they might only have a mirror on one side of the block. The guidecraft blocks have mirrors on 2 sides of the block. The guidecraft blocks appear to have more rounded edges if that is a concern.
Summary:
Not the best quality with the wood frames or the mirrors, but these are very unique and we do enjoy playing with them. If another company starts making these, I would consider another brand because of quality issues. With all of that being said, when these blocks are part of a building project with other blocks, these details are not all that apparent and the mirrors really do look neat. I would have given 4.5 stars if it was possible.
