Lovely "First treasure box" for my little girl, EXCEPT...Mar 30, 2010

"reading-FREAK!"
This treasure box is quite lovely, really; with only one exception which I'll save for the closing of my review. But first...
The outside of the box is decorated with unicorns (& one fairy) shown in various outdoor settings, drawn in soft, yet very rich, pastels. The golden-brushed hardware looks delicate, but each piece is sturdy & seemingly up to the task of repeatedly being used by a young child; a child who could give IKEA a good run for their money against their famous usage trials.
The four drawers simply beg to be filled with one's treasures. The two smaller drawers -on the left & right sides- are easy to open; no sticking at all. However, the two long drawers should really have two pull-knobs, but a little bit of rocking solves this quirk. The drawers, as well as the *inner compartment, are lined with a soft, rich, buttery-yellow velvet; very pretty. *An important note about the inner compartment: Space-wise, there's not much to it. Because of the drawers and the area needed for the music player, the inner compartment is long, but very short & shallow (approx. 6" wide x 1 1/4" high x 2 1/2" deep). This bothers my daughter not one whit.
The mane and tail of the white unicorn match the yellow velvet color plus a pearl-like sheen, and NO GLITTER...Yay! The seam from the mold is more noticeable than I would like. This bothers my daughter not one whit, either.
The EXCEPTION mentioned in my opening statement is...the SONG! Immediately upon hearing the tune, my just-turned 7 year old daughter said in a small, trembling voice, "The unicorns DIE in this song!" Yes, it's true. The song they chose for this delightful music box is one where all the unicorns die. There are many versions of this song, but the unicorns either die, or they each morph into the creature we call "Pegasus." This explaination does nothing to help a little girl's confusion about the plight of the unicorns. I know there aren't many well-known unicorn themed songs out there, but there's the opening song from "The Last Unicorn." Heck, Fur Elise would be less imaginative, but better than the one they actually chose.

Lovely toy with potential, but overshadowed by poor craftsmanshipMay 01, 2010
By A. Johnson This is a beautiful box with lovely illustrations and a very nice song. This is unfortunately the second (first was the ballerina) treasure box we've had to return by this manufacturer, due to the wind up crank failing. The quality of the mechanics is really poor, as if the company has gone the absolute cheapest route. It's a bummer because this box visually and aurally doesn't strike you as low quality at first. If they would just upgrade the internal workings, it would be a perfect little treasure box.

Exactly as expectedJan 17, 2010
By drderek I bought this for my wife for Christmas who still very much loves unicorns and fairies and anything pink. She was very cute as she spent her time figuring out what jewelery she would put in which drawer, just like a six year old girl. She actually got a very nice carved jewelry box from my sister-in-law, but this one was hands down her favourite. I think this would make an excellent present for a young girl or any women who still has a little girl in her, like mine.

My Daughter loves Fairies and UnicornsMar 02, 2010
By Amber L. Leask There is nothing worse than seeing your kids face light up and then fall crushed because the toy is broken. I learned early on to check toys before giving. I bought three different ones because I loved all the pictures and they don't hold much. Each one had an issue: 1) drawers didn't open without forcing them. 2) the wood piece that holds the drawers from falling out were not attached anymore, they were in the bottom of the drawer. 3)the music box kept starting and stopping and was so scratchy you couldn't tell what the song was. Although beautiful on the outside, they will end up in the trash quickly. Spend a little extra and get them something that will last at least a few years.

Granddaughter liked this.Jan 08, 2011

My only complaint about this music box was that the unicorn that spins to the music is molded with a twist to it's body indicating the direction it is supposed to be prancing. It was somehow wrong and it turns as if prancing backwards! Music was unrecognisable as the song I expected but maybe there are two versions of "The Unicorn Song." Grandaughter (6) seemed to like this for all it's storage compartments.
