This is where you start to learn to fly an RC Helicopter(Get Non-Radio Version)Oct 16, 2011
By B. Fuller IIf you want to learn to fly a RC Helicopter this is where you start. Welcome to the adventure. The first thing you need to do is get the version of this that doesn't come with a radio. You will want to buy the DX6i Transmitter Only MD2 radio. This radio will carry you through the Blade 450 and you can bind up to 6 aircraft to it and it only cost 160 buck which is dirt cheap for what it does.
When you get this program download, make sure you download the Blade mCP X as this is what you are going to buy further on down the road (Just go ahead and down load everything but especially this aircraft). Next download the mCP X Spektrum DX6i setting from the web (Something to note, on the helo, the collective channel is reversed. In the sim you need to set it up in the normal direction).
Now you have the radio you are going to use to when you get your helo, you have it set up the same way as you will use it, and you have the helo modeled in the sim. You are pretty well set up for success now. One thing to note, is the sim is easier in some ways and more difficult in some. Also, there is a big difference between sitting in front of a screen and having this little angry bee flying at your head. So keep that in mind.
Before continuing, I will answer your question about why the Blade mCP X Bind and Fly RC Helicopter. There are really 3 main reasons, the first is it doesn't have a stab bar. To compensate for that, this helo is actually comparatively stable. The second and most important is damage resistance. I will tell your right now. You are going to crash. Even after hours in the sim, you will crash. Got that. If you, use your throttle cut before you actually hit anything, it is very likely, this helicopter will be flyable after the crash. This is because of the light weight and lack of a stab bar. Almost any crash with the 450 is going to put it out of commission (weight and stab bar). The 3rd reason is repair costs are very cheap. If you think I am off the mark on this, try flying the Blade 450 or Trex 600 in the sim. See how many times you crash)
I tried to learn to fly a RC helicopter twice before the mCP X and came away frustrated and significantly poorer both times (Hirobo Shuttle and TRex 450).
Start with the sim and you are going to save tons of money and frustration. With your radio hooked up to the computer and the Blade mCP X running, practice your hovering (The sim has hover training but I personally did not find it very useful Hover nose out until you can stay in one location. Hover nose left and right until you can do the same. Hover nose in. Now do all of the same upside down. Practice 30min a day every day. After a few months, maybe sooner, you should have your hovering down. Don't get frustrated, these little things are incredibly difficult to fly. The biggest thing you are going to do is make your control movements to big. If you are conscious of the stick moving, your movements are too big.
Once you have that down, get yourself a Blade mCP X BNF and start your practice all over again. Move slowly Don't expect to be able to do in real life what you can in the sim but you will be able to move rapidly because of your practice.
Ok so I talked about how to learn to fly, but why this simulator. The main reason is it has the Blade mCP X. Period. However, I will say I have a very old computer and this program runs very smoothly on it. So that is another plus. I have seen some people knocking this sim because it has picture environments instead of 3D. My response to that is big deal. I really don't care that much about the environments and picture allows this to run smoothly on a slower computer. Everything I have seen and read about this sim says it is realistic. I would agree with that statement as much as any sim can be realistic. (Blade mCP X experiences tail blow outs and nose rotation during autorotations which does not happen in the sim)
As far as the training and lessons go, I am not really impressed. There is a ton of work that needs to be done to make these more useful learning devices. The programmers of this program should look at what was done in any of the Gran Turismo to see how they could make the training much better. You will need to come to this program with your own training syllabus. As I said before, there is an autorotation and hovering training mode. The hovering mode gives you 1 control at a time. Maybe useful for starting but you will quickly outgrow it. Additionally, there are some demo lessons but the instruction goes far too fast to keep up with. The training part really needs to be re-thought and improved.
The extras can be useful and fun. One extra is balloon pop. The nice thing with this is it takes your conscious mind off of flying and put it on hitting the balloons. As they said on Last Samurai, some times you have "too many minds".
Overall, this is a great program which is an invaluable tool to help you learn to fly RC helicopters. It will make you better quicker and cheaper than would otherwise be possible.

Saved $1000's of dollars and extreme frustrationJun 23, 2011

Runs great on Windows 7. They constantly update the different planes you can use. This is a real controller you can use once you are good enough for the real thing. The biggest thing about this product is it gives you a realistic simulation of your RC skills as well as how things would turn out in the real world. Great tool to sharpen your skills. Just plug the controller into a USB port.

Pheonix R/C Pro Sim 3.0 W/DX5eJul 24, 2011

For the money this flight sim is awesome! Comes with 2.4 gig DX5e so you can use on a RC plane if you like. There are a lot of planes, helis, gliders and even an autogyro. I sold my Real Flight as they nickle and dime you for new aircraft. Buy this Phoenix flight sim....well worth the money.

This will save you money in repair bills !!!Sep 23, 2011

I did not buy this package. I own the stand alone DX6i transmitter and did not need the DX5e. I bought the stand alone Phoenix also.
If you want to learn to fly your aircraft while reducing your crashes and cost of repairs, this is the software for you. I went the other way, fly, crash, repair, repeat. Wish I would have known about this sim before.
All the new aircraft and updates are free, making this a better choice for me over RealFlight that keeps nickeling and diming peeps to death. Have to pay for the new aircraft with them. I don't like that at all.
I have Blade 450 3D, Blade 120SR and others and Phoenix has helped me learn to fly them much quicker because it takes the "hesitant to crash" element out of flying.
Good Luck and Happy Flying

Better graphics than expectedAug 31, 2011
By DaneEaster I was surprised at how good the graphics were. I was stunned to be "gaming" in minutes on stunning sites with other practicing pilots around the world.
1) Great installation process. 2) Simple to do most of the set-up. 3) Fairly intuitive platform.
I have two areas of disappointment:
I purchased a blade mcp x and grashed it so many times within an hour of flying that I wanted to learn more. When I practice it on here it is SO EASY to fly. My impression is that it is easier to fly things on this platform by a factor of two to three times than it is in real life. Nor is it entirely realistic. In the one area that the simulator crashes easily: on the actual version I fly I can tip over without taking off and it does not damage the props at all. In the simulated version the props all fly into different pieces the instant any of them touch the ground.
I cannot seem to get it to simulate looking OUT of the plane from pilots view.
The other issue I have is that when adjusting the controls of the transmitter they adjustment screen BLOCKS the view of the plane so I can't see what change to make or if it is having the desirable affect. It asks me which things I want to set up for "channel 2" for example. But it does not visually show what channel two is OR what "elevator, aileron" etc. is which is two things I have to remember/guess while not being able to see the plane. As a result I spent a confusing 15 minutes setting up my transmitter rather than an EASY two minutes. This would make a huge difference for me as a new pilot. Since this is a TRAINING program treat me as a novice - don't just ask me questions I don't yet know the answer to without easy help.
It is better than expected by far on the entertainment side. I suspect it will be possible with weather adjustments to get it to be effective on the practice/education side.
