We've had this train trio for about 6 months now and my 2.5 year old still loves it. Of course, he is obsessed with Thomas at the moment. :) The Jet Pack is of great interest since it lights up and makes noise.

I think the fact that these will connect either front or back is also great for younger kids who may get too frustrated if it doesn't connect quickly. This was especially wonderful when he first got them, but now he has no trouble with his other trains that do not connect on both ends.

My four-year-old nephew really liked this toy. He would set it up and then run it in the circle created by my living room, dining, room, kitchen, and foyer. He would release it and then follow it around. It moved from wood floor to carpet to marble floor with no difficulty. Given how long he would play with it, I classified this gift as a hit.
