5Fun For FourJan 06, 2010
By Joe
I bought this for my boys (6 & 8) for Christmas after finding the old AFX set from my youth in my folks basement at Thanksgiving.
The newer cars (especially the SRT models) are much faster and stay on the track better, but as BRB says in his review, the child needs some patience or must learn to be patient. My oldest had a friend over who would just gun it and send the cars flying across the room and then lost interest because he didn't like having to go get his car.
I was a bit disappointed that the New-and-Improved track does not stay together as well as the track of my youth, they should really supply the track clips with the set (I ordered a bag of 100 through Amazon already).

One of the cars that came with the set crapped out after only an hour or two of total running time. I have yet to hear back from Racemasters and will update once the issue is resolved.

Overall though, my boys, wife and I can sit for hours racing each other, having four lanes is great fun, it has lap counters but we just chase each other really.

The set comes with the Super G+ cars but Santa brought us each an SRT Daytona or GT40 and we find the SRT cars are faster and hold the track better than the Super G+ cars.
One nice thing is most of my old AFX car bodies will fit on the new chassis so we, err I, can run my old cars.

1Terrible... design or build flaw.. won't assemble. Instead, try AFX 4-Lane Super International Race Set w / Mega G Cars by AFXAug 28, 2011

Bought this for my twin boys. They spent an hour trying to get it to work... track design does not fit together at the end.

We replaced it with AFX 4-Lane Super International Race Set w / Mega G Cars by AFX. That's a much better set.

This race care set is great! I am 68 and the first set I used/played I was 16! The cars are unbelieveably fast on these new sets! I highly recommend AFX. One of the cars was defective but when I called "Racemasters" they sent out another car at no charge! The power supplies/controllers are really powerful enough to provide way more speed than the track can handle and that is a good thing! Thanks again "Racemasters" My grandboys, 5 and 6 really like this set! Here is an update on 2-5 2011. The replacement car I received also failed but I easily contacted "Racemasters" via e-mail and another different car is being sent free of charge. I did not get a "run around" and was treated very nicely. I will continue to do business with Racemasters and special thanks to "Eve"!

Very straightforwrard assembly, included directions easy to read. Up and running in about 15 minutes. Product is fairly durable and the cars are fast.

3It's Not Like the AFX tracks of the 1970sJan 12, 2011

I bought this track for my 7 yr old son for XMAS. Shipped on a timely basis. All of my comparisons will be compared to AFX track of the 1979-1982 period. I find the track to be lighter weight plastic, the hand controls are slightly smaller, and the system for connecting the track together is far inferior to the system earlier. This is probably my biggest pet peeve. The darn track seperates all the time. There is a website for an AFX dealer that highly recommends screwing down the track to plywood. I would agree. The website explains how, and I believe sells screws etc. Of course, you could probably find something at the Depot. The transformers that are on the end of the cords are huge also, and they wouldn't plug fully into the 6' extension cord I have. Since the transformes are so huge, you can't plug both of them into the same outlet. So I'm still trying to figure this one out, to make sure I don't have a fire hazard. On the pro side, the newest technology cars fly, it takes alot to have them fly off the track, although, that takes a lot of the skill out of the game. The also work on my old track and show the same ability to hug the track. Unlike the old track where you have to screw the control wires to a plate, the new controllers plug right in, and so do the transformers ... very nice. Its easy to change direction, just flip over the transformer plug. In the old days, we would have to take apart our cars and reverse the magnets around the commutator. Guardrail is of the same approx. quality. Comes also with cardboard scenes that you fold into 3D grandstands and pit shop. In conclusion, the pros do not outweigh the cons. If I have to spend time over and over again pressing pieces of track together, I'm not happy. Of course, if you have a designated area to keep the track set up, and screw it down to wood, this is then a non-issue.
